Rudy Van Gelder Edition
“Homestretch” is a pretty burning 12-bar blues from Joe Henderson’s Page One [RVG remastered edition]. Pete “La Roca” Sims is a severely slept-on drummer whose sound is a bit reminiscent of Joe Chambers and Billy Higgins.
Henderson and La Roca trade for four choruses – Henderson getting the first 4 bars of each chorus and La Roca taking the back 8. La Roca stretches out on the melody at the end so I included that as well. Keep in mind that there is A LOT of dynamic expression that is not specifically notated – mostly left out to keep it from looking too cluttered. Also note that McCoy Tyner gets listed on the cover as “ETC.” due to him being under contract with Impulse! Records at the time.
